Rep. Lofgren sent a letter on Jan. 29, 2007 to Chairman John Conyers asking him to have the Committee republish the 1974 report Constitutional Grounds for Presidential Impeachment, and to hold hearings on it. She is thus not calling for impeachment hearings directly, only hearings on having hearings.
Zoe Lofgren spoke on March 8, 2008 at the International Women's Day event in San Jose today, with SVIC demonstrating outside. When she came out, we asked her whether House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers had read her letter yet, and she said that he has, but has not yet replied. So we need to ask our Representatives to ask him, "What are you going to tell Zoe?" in order to move this along.
Silicon Valley Impeachment Coalition demonstrates every Friday between 3 and 5 p.m. in front of Zoe Lofgren's office at 635 N. First Street (near Taylor), San Jose, California.
SVIC blog article on Lofgren's position on impeachment hearings
Several members of SVIC met with Rep. Lofgren on June 30, 2008 to ask her to take effective action toward impeachment hearings. She said that impeachment has no chance in the remaining six weeks of Congress, but that hearings are continuing, as are legal actions in DC US Federal District Court to get subpoenas and contempt citations served and obeyed. She was pleased to hear that Barack Obama has pledged to have his Attorney-General investigate the allegations against the Bush Administration, and about former New York Governor Elliot Spitzer's charges against the Administration on behalf of New York and all 49 other state Attorneys-General.
We have agreed with her to supply further information to her staff. The next question on the agenda is making these crimes election issues.
